Follow-up to #3059 and #3182. This PR simplifies how node views draw frames, and makes vanilla and React frames use one path.

Summary

A node view now gets a block's frame as a FrameView: the frame's dom, its slot (which holds the content and children), and update, selectNode, deselectNode and destroy. React supplies a FrameView through the internal frameView hook. Without the hook, core uses vanillaFrameView, which wraps the block's renderFrame. The two node views (blockContainer and containers) use the same code: implementation.frameView?.(props) ?? vanillaFrameView(...).

Changes

blockContainer node view

  • The node view is rebuilt from main's BlockContainer, step by step. Every block gets it. Without a frame, it is as fast as ProseMirror's default node view (measured in jsdom and in Chromium, Firefox and WebKit).
  • On a type change, a block without a frame keeps its DOM and its children, as on main. A block whose frame comes or goes is drawn again.
  • Block colors stay on .bn-block, so Block.css applies them to the children too. A new block with the default colors gets no DOM calls.

Frames

  • FrameView (in frame.ts) replaces renderFrameInEditor, drawFrame, LiveFrame and the stand-in node view for blocks without a frame.
  • vanillaFrameView handles declining, the frame's update hook and container stamping. Its update has one branch for each outcome, and each branch has a comment on what its return means.
  • The code that draws a frame stamps it: renderFrameDOM (both serializers) and vanillaFrameView (the editor). The spec no longer wraps renderFrame. Before, a vanilla container's renderFrame got renderType: "dom" in the editor, and its frame was stamped twice.
  • One set of chrome rules for vanilla and React frames:
    • isFrameChromeEvent: ProseMirror ignores events on the chrome, except drag-and-drop and clipboard events (copy, cut, paste).
    • isFrameRenderingMutation: ProseMirror ignores DOM changes to the chrome, attribute changes on the slot element, and Dark Reader's changes.
  • React's frame update draws a regular block again when its type changes.
  • FrameView has node: the node the view shows. The frame view owns it (vanilla tracks it, React reads TipTap's). It changes only when update keeps the view. The node views keep no node of their own.
  • Two shared helpers in frame.ts build both node views: blockFrameView (React's frame view, else the vanilla one) and frameNodeViewHooks (stopEvent, ignoreMutation, selectNode, deselectNode, destroy).

Containers

  • A container's node view refuses a node with another id. ProseMirror can offer a view whose node is gone to the next node of the same type. Before, one container's frame (and its React state) could move to another container in the same transaction, for example when a container is removed and its sibling changes. This bug was also on the base branch. Regular blocks were not affected: their sameMarkup check covers the id.

Block elements

  • New: getBlockElementForNode(view, pos, id). It returns the same element that getBlockElement finds from inside the block: .bn-block for a regular block, the frame root for a container (vanilla or React).
  • BlockPopover uses it. Before, it used domAtPos, which assumed the block's DOM structure and gave the wrong element for containers.

Behavior changes compared to main

  • A block without a frame: no change in DOM, events or type changes. ProseMirror ignores two more kinds of DOM changes: Dark Reader's changes, and attribute changes on .bn-block itself. Nothing in BlockNote makes these changes.
  • Toggle blocks: their chrome is now in a frame, so ProseMirror no longer gets its events. A browser A/B test (Chromium, Firefox, WebKit) found no difference for clicks on the toggle and "add block" buttons: same selection, focus and document.

Open items

These are marked with TODO or FIXME in the code:

  • A declined React frame falls back to a wrapper inside the node view. React should decline like vanilla frames do.
  • React's render builds the content node view and draws the content. An internal adapter hook would let render only draw.
  • A React container's frame exists only after React renders its node views. Until then, getBlockElementForNode returns undefined.

Tests

  • New: frame.test.ts (chrome rules), BlockContainer.test.ts (colors, type changes), blockElementForNode.test.tsx (every kind of block in a React editor), and cases in renderFrame.test.ts and reactFrame.test.tsx, including "never gives one container's frame to another container" (vanilla and React).
  • Unit tests: all packages and the tests package.
  • Type-aware lint for the full repository.
  • Browser tests (Docker): containers, React frames and containers, toggles, block colors, side menu, images, drag handle, multi-column, copy and paste.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added a way to locate a block’s rendered element, including blocks inside wrappers and frames. Block popovers now anchor to the matching block element.
    • Updated block frames to handle content and property changes while preserving editing behavior and frame content.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved block color updates and frame transitions when block types change.

- FrameView: what a node view needs from a block's frame. React supplies
it through the internal `frameView` hook; `vanillaFrameView` wraps a
vanilla `renderFrame` (declining, `update` hook, container stamping).
- BlockContainer's node view is rebuilt from main's: it keeps the block
and its children on a type change, keeps colors on `.bn-block`, and is
as fast as ProseMirror's default for blocks without a frame.
- Whoever draws a frame stamps it (`renderFrameDOM`, `vanillaFrameView`);
the spec no longer wraps `renderFrame`, so a vanilla container gets the
node-view render context in the editor.
- Shared chrome rules: `isFrameChromeEvent` (drag-and-drop and clipboard
events still go to ProseMirror) and `isFrameRenderingMutation`.
- `getBlockElementForNode` finds a block's element for every kind of
block; BlockPopover uses it instead of assuming the DOM structure.

Frame rendering now uses FrameView instances across core and React block node views. The change also adds an exported helper to resolve block DOM elements by position and ID, and uses it to anchor BlockPopover.

Update the stale createFrameView reference in the TODO.

This PR removes createFrameView. Its replacement is vanillaFrameView. The TODO still refers to the old function, and that sends readers to code that no longer exists.

- A container's node view refuses a node with another id. ProseMirror
offers a view whose node is gone to the next node of the same type, so
a frame (and React state) could move to another block.
- FrameView has `node`, the node it shows: one owner of the current node.
- `blockFrameView` and `frameNodeViewHooks` replace the duplicated wiring
in the two node views. Remove the dead type check in containerNodeView.
